Why Rigging Is Never Boring and Why We Want the Next Generation to See It Too

Rigging is often seen as a straightforward trade. Bring the crane in, lift the load, secure it, and move on. But anyone in this field knows it is anything but routine. It is technical, creative, and constantly changing, which is exactly why we love it.

A decade of Rigsafe has shown us that strong industries are built by skilled and motivated people. We want the next generation to see that rigging is not just a job. It is a craft, a career, and a pathway to meaningful opportunities. It is the kind of work that lets you look at Perth’s skyline with pride and tell your kids, “I built that!”

A sample of our recent projects shows just how varied and technical the work can be. Whether we’re using new methods to install elevated rail components, replacing façade panels in the bustling CBD, or maneuvering brewery tanks into tight fit-outs, the job requires planning, problem solving, and constant innovation. With every site presenting new demands and

Perth Film Studios – Construction Project Partner

Our work on the Home Fire film studios project is an example of large-scale, high-speed rigging, which demanded something special from our team. Multiple sound stages and structural elements had to be installed within a compressed, government-driven timeline. To maintain progress, we planned every crane movement and delivery in detail.

Work like this requires strong coordination – we managed to have the job completed in around eight months – to ensure the overall project can be delivered as promised.

Central Park Tower – Façade Replacement

The Central Park Tower façade replacement represents another complexity encountered by the Rigsafe team. It was vital that the works didn’t interrupt business within the building itself or surrounding streets, requiring fervent activity over nights and weekends for months to get the job done. Access was also impacted by the tower’s curved exterior, meaning we had to develop a Level 5 gantry and suspended scaffold system specifically for the site. Every sequence had to be completed and cleared before Monday morning.

These types of jobs reinforce our firm belief that no two jobs are ever exactly same - the constraints change, and our approach changes with them.

Breweries & Hospitality Installation

In recent years we have worked on dozens of brewery and hospitality installs across the state – each presenting a unique challenge in navigating tight access, and slow, controlled lifts. We’ve been called on to install large brewery tanks in the tightest of spots next to dining areas without marks or damage, often through narrow access ways and finished interiors.

These projects rely on precision rather than scale, and the art of a successful manoeuvre has become a point of pride for our experienced team. Being able to work across major infrastructure projects as well as these intricate installs is not always easy, but it’s one of the key reasons why the job is far from dull.

Alua Light Rail – Civil Construction

Some projects present challenges that push us to learn something entirely new. The elevated rail component of Metronet was a first for WA and involved gantry cranes that had never been used in Perth. We brought in specialists from Queensland, adapted the system to local conditions, and upskilled our team to operate the gantries efficiently with minimal ground disruption. This project lifted our workforce to a new level of proficiency, giving us the experience to work with similar equipment again.

Americold Cold Storage Facility - Australia’s tallest high-bay racking installation

We designed a system from the ground up to deliver the Dematic high-bay racking project – the tallest of its kind ever completed in Australia. With limited space on site, we positioned a mobile crane inside the structure and engineered a custom aluminium flipper deck that slid into place on rollers and unfolded into a secure work platform for bolting racks more than 50 metres high. This was so innovative, that it was recognised with a Work Health & Safety Excellence Invention of the Year Award nomination. We repeated the process more than 1,400 times and still exceeded programme expectations. Projects like this are technically challenging, and prompt us to build solutions that improve how we operate time and time again.

Legacy Projects Across Perth

Other recognisable Rigsafe projects include the lion enclosure at Perth Zoo, the façade entry panels at the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel, and the roof hanging audio systems at Optus Stadium.

These projects, and countless others across Perth and Western Australia, reflect the innovation and opportunity we experience every day. The work is never boring. It is meaningful, purpose driven work that shapes our community, and we are proud to play our part as a trusted project partner delivering solutions across complex environments. We cannot wait to see what the next project brings and what the future of our industry holds as we continue lifting standards across WA.
