
Rigsafe partnered with MCT Equipment to deliver specialist lifting, rigging and gantry crane operations for the Armadale Line Upgrade (ALUA), supporting one of Western Australia's largest rail infrastructure projects through meticulous planning, operator training and the safe installation of more than 1,000 precast elements.
Project Requirements and Site Conditions
The Armadale Line Upgrade (ALUA) formed part of one of Western Australia's largest public transport infrastructure projects, requiring the installation of major precast bridge components and structural elements within tightly controlled construction windows.
Working alongside long-term client MCT Equipment, Rigsafe was engaged to support the mobilisation and operation of specialised gantry cranes sourced from Europe specifically for the project. These cranes were critical to the installation methodology and required specialist knowledge, operator competency and detailed planning before works commenced.
The project presented a number of challenges, including introducing specialised equipment not commonly used in Western Australia, coordinating multiple work fronts across day and night shifts, and maintaining strict safety and programme requirements within a live rail infrastructure environment. Early planning and collaboration were essential to ensure construction activities could commence without delay once possession windows became available.
How Rigsafe Delivered the Work
Rigsafe worked collaboratively with MCT Equipment during the early planning stages to develop a delivery strategy that would maximise efficiency while maintaining the highest safety standards throughout the project.
Recognising the specialised nature of the gantry crane system, Rigsafe arranged for an international specialist trainer to travel to Perth to train and certify our operators across three gantry crane systems before construction activities commenced. This proactive approach ensured experienced, competent operators were available from day one, eliminating delays during the critical construction programme.
Once works commenced, Rigsafe supplied specialist operators, rigging crews and lifting expertise to support the installation of major precast components across multiple work fronts. Careful planning allowed operations to continue seamlessly across both day and night shifts, maintaining programme momentum while coordinating safely with the principal contractor and other site teams.

The Result on Site
Through detailed planning, specialist training and experienced project delivery, Rigsafe helped ensure the Armadale Line Upgrade remained on programme while safely delivering one of the project's most technically demanding lifting scopes.
Across the project, the Rigsafe team completed more than 30,000 work hours without a Lost Time Injury (LTI) while successfully installing over 1,000 precast elements, including structural beams exceeding 130 tonnes.
The project demonstrates Rigsafe's ability to provide more than crane hire and rigging services. By investing in early planning, workforce capability and specialist lifting solutions, Rigsafe helped reduce project risk, avoid costly programme delays and deliver a safe, efficient outcome for one of Western Australia's most significant rail infrastructure projects.
